A sketch is a preliminary depiction or study in the process of artistic creation. As an unfinished draft, it embodies uncertainty, incompleteness, and the potential for transformation.
Sketches: A Special Exhibition by Michael Lin does not follow a chronological narrative. Instead, it brings together a selection of works spanning more than three decades of the artist's career, encompassing a diverse range of artistic practices. Modest in scale, the exhibition is not intended as a retrospective, but rather as an outline—a sketch—of Lin's artistic practice from the mid-1990s to the present.
Many of Michael Lin's works are large-scale, site-specific installations that intervene in architectural spaces and coexist with everyday life. As these works cannot be relocated from their original sites, this exhibition brings together relatively lightweight and adaptable works that can be presented in different settings, alongside preliminary sketches, photographic documentation, and technical drawings that are often regarded as supplementary materials. In doing so, the exhibition highlights the significant role these materials play in expressing the ideas and concepts that have shaped Lin's artistic trajectory.
By bringing together these rarely exhibited works in a variety of styles and forms, the exhibition seeks to trace the evolving contours of the artist's practice. Through an examination of preliminary sketches, technical drawings, and photographic documentation, it offers a clearer understanding of the central concerns underlying Michael Lin's artistic creation.
