The fourth edition of Helsinki Biennial is curated by internationally acclaimed Curator Mami Kataoka and Finnish museum professional and contemporary art expert Arja Miller.
The biennial spreads across three distinct venues: the unique maritime setting of Vallisaari Island, Esplanade Park in the heart of Helsinki, and HAM Helsinki Art Museum’s Tennis Palace premises.
In a world defined by political turmoil, environmental upheaval, and deepening uncertainty, the fourth edition of Helsinki Biennial turns towards unknowns not with fear but with curiosity. Taking Unknowns as its curatorial framework, the biennial approaches what lies beyond comprehension through imagination and artistic inquiry. It dwells in the unresolved and the hidden, where uncertainty itself becomes ground for wonder and for reimagining how we understand the world.
Helsinki Biennial 2027 will present the work of approximately 45 artists and artist groups. The confirmed participants include: Ari Bayuaji (Indonesia/Canada), Ching-Yuan Chen (Taiwan), Dede Cipon (Indonesia), Tara Donovan (United States), Laurent Grasso (France), Marguerite Humeau (France/United Kingdom), Leiko Ikemura (Japan/Switzerland), Tove Jansson (Finland), Jane Jin Kaisen (South Korea/Denmark), Matias Karsikas (Finland), Muriel Kuoppala (Switzerland), Britta Marakatt-Labba (Sápmi/Sweden), Ragnhild May (Denmark), Haroon Mirza (United Kingdom), Yoshitomo Nara (Japan), Josefina Nelimarkka (Finland), Anna Niskanen (Finland), Erkki Pirtola (Finland), Tawatchai Puntusawasdi (Thailand), Anna Retulainen (Finland), Eino Ruutsalo (Findland), Momoko Seto (Japan/France), Jakob Kudsk Steensen (Denmark), Axel Straschnoy (Argentina/Finland), Ingunn Utsi (Sápmi/Norway), Marja Viitahuhta (Finland) & Ánnámáret (Sápmi/Finland), Haegue Yang (South Korea/Germany), and Ebosi Yuasa (Japan).
